MCG Telecommunications Directional Drill Operator-Locator

Department: MCG Outside Plant
Location: Ottumwa, IA

Mahaska Communications Group (MCG) is looking for a Telecom Directional Drill Operator-Locator to join our dynamic and fast-paced team. A Telecommunications Directional Drill Operator and Locator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the directional drill and locate the drill head to understand elevation changes and make decisions on drilling depths to avoid hitting underground utilities to place product underground.

Please note: This position will be working construction projects throughout MCG's service territory. If applicable, mileage and lodging will be reimbursed per our company policy. What You Will Be Doing:

  • Promoting safety consciousness and adherence to OSHA, Utility, Federal, State, and Local safety requirements during placement of underground network.
  • Prepares job and drill so that boring can be performed safely and efficiently.
  • Fills water tanks and combines water with chemicals for boring according to the ground conditions.
  • Verifies the bore area to ensure all utilities have been located and develops a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the bore path.
  • Locates the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth.
  • Pulls back product with the correct equipment and utilizes the correct mud mixture to ensure that the product makes it from point B to point A.
  • Provides accurate as-built information to be entered into GIS system.
  • Performs QC & QA on all work completed and equipment.
  • Participates in emergency repair of equipment.
  • Other misc. duties as assigned.

What You Will Need To Be Successful:

  • High school degree or GED is required.
  • A valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License and the ability to drive to and from worksite is required.
  • Experience using hand tools and construction equipment preferred.
  • 1 Year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment related to but not limited to directional drill, vacuum excavators, mini excavators, skid loaders, trenchers, cable plows, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, etc.
  • Ability to accurately operate underground locating equipment and bore rig.
  • Ability to do some maintenance of drill equipment and mixing unit.
  • Strong oral, written, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to follow and understand established standards.
  • Self-motivated – need to work well unsupervised.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, days/nights and weekends as needed, and travel where needed.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.

Other Special Requirements:

  • Ability to work a variable schedule, days/nights and weekends as needed, and travel where needed.
  • Comply with Federal DOT rules and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing under the rules of the Federal Railroad Administration and a pre-employment physical and background check.
