Transporation Specialist
The Musco Risk Management team has an opening for a Transportation Specialist at our Oskaloosa office. This position will focus on ensuring the organization meets all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA) regulations through centralized management of compliance tasks. This role streamlines processes, maintains accurate records, and supports driver and worker readiness to promote safety, efficiency, and regulatory adherence across operations. Essential Criteria:
- 5+ years of experience in a safety/transportation compliance role.
- Robust DOT and FMCSA understanding. FAA and/or FRA knowledge and understanding a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, legal, public health, business or a related field preferred.
- Management experience preferred.
- Risk management.
- Internal auditing.
- Corporate governance.
- Regulatory frameworks (FMCSA, FRA, FAA, HIPAA, etc.).
- Strong analytical skills.
- Innovative problem-solving with a team-oriented mindset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with Musco solutions is a plus.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Stay current on FMCSA, FAA, and FRA regulations; communicate changes and train staff to ensure ongoing compliance. Build procedures and content based on those.
- Create, develop and implement policies, procedures, and training to improve safety performance and compliance.
- Manage all fuel tax filings and secure required out-of-state permits; coordinate with internal teams to gather accurate data.
- Maintain the drug testing pool, ensure CDL drivers are enrolled and screened, and follow up on test results per DOT requirements.
- Maintain detailed and compliant records (electronic and paper) for logs, incidents, and training, ensuring data retention meets regulatory timelines.
- Perform annual compliance reviews of all CDL holders and manage clearinghouse submissions for eligibility checks.
- Lead investigations into all vehicle-related incidents, determine root causes, and implement programs to prevent recurrence.
- Train drivers on HOS regulations and maintain accurate logs to ensure full compliance with DOT standards.
- Guide team members through the CDL process, schedule test appointments, and ensure all steps align with FMCSA guidelines.
- Monitor expiration dates, notify drivers in advance, and manage all associated requirements to maintain legal eligibility.
